BRIEF ENCOUNTERS WITH JESUS

By Mary-Ellen Grisham
JESUS TALKS WITH A LONELY WOMAN
Scripture: John 4:1-42 The Samaritan Woman at Jacob's Well
Memory Verse: "Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me." John 14: 21 (Jesus is speaking.)
Warm-ups: Choose one
1. Have peanut butter on a cracker followed by a cool drink.
2. Have the children form a circle to make a well, with a child in center holding water. Give each child a small cup to dip from the water. Water plants or pour in sink.
3. Have a water relay with two teams, team buckets, cups for each child, and a full bucket at front. The team with the most water in the team bucket when time is called wins!
Simple Story: based on John 4:1-41.
Jesus was travelling through Samaria and stopped at a well outside the town of Sychar, while his disciples went into the town to get food. When a Samaritan woman came to the well all alone, he asked the woman to give him a drink. She was surprised because Jews like Jesus usually would not be friendly to Samaritans. Jesus explained to her that he could give her living water, not the still water from the well. He meant that he could teach her about God and give her lasting truth. His teaching could bring eternal life.
Jesus explained to her by the example of her family life that she would have to give up wrong ways of living to receive new life and Jesus' saving truths. From the facts about her life that Jesus knew without being told, she realized that he was a great teacher and prophet. She and Jesus discussed how to worship God the right way, with sincerity in the inner life from a heart of love. The woman realized that Jesus might be the promised Messiah, Christ the Son of God. Jesus tells her that he is.
When the disciples returned, the woman went to town to tell the people about Jesus. They came to see Jesus and invited him to stay with them. He stayed two days teaching them truths about God, and they became believers in Jesus' message and in Him as God's Savior for the world.
Special Learning: The Samaritans had mixed their belief in God with ideas from other religions. Their religion was not as pure as that of the Jews, and frequently they worshipped outdoors rather than in a temple.
Question: Why do you think Jesus was kind to the lonely woman who came to the well when none of the other town's women would be there?
Love Actions: Think of someone who is lonely that you could visit this week. Be kind!
