BRIEF ENCOUNTERS WITH JESUS

By Mary-Ellen Grisham
A THOUGHTFUL MAN LEARNS ABOUT JESUS
Scripture: John 3:1-21 Jesus Teaches Nicodemus
Memory Verse: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16 (NIV)
Warm-ups: Choose one
1. Bubbles in the breeze - Go outdoors and make bubbles with soap and wand.
2. Use small pinwheels on a stick and the child's breath to turn the toy.
3. Watch the trees and bushes to see the progress of the wind through them.
Simple Story: Who are you, Jesus?
Nicodemus, who was an important religious leader called a Pharisee, came to visit Jesus by night. He was a member of the Jewish ruling council and was a careful, just man who was trying to find out about Jesus and his purpose.
As the two talk, Nicodemus says that he knows Jesus is a teacher from God, but he seems to be searching for the full truth of Jesus' being. Jesus tells Nicodemus that if he is to understand God's kingdom and Jesus' mission, he must become a new person, one who is baptized and filled with God's Spirit. The Spirit, like the wind, is unseen, but we can see the work of its powerful movement. The Spirit helps us to understand spiritual truths that may be difficult for us.
Jesus reveals to Nicodemus that he is God's son, the One whom God has sent to bring light, love, and forgiveness to man. Jesus comes to bring salvation and eternal life to human beings. Even though humans sometimes become comfortable with sinful ways, faith in Jesus will help them to change and come into the light of God's love. God's people, who have been saved by faith in Jesus, live with truth and obedience to God's Word. The world can see their goodness and praise God for it.
Special Learning: The religious leaders of Jesus' day were very uncertain about him, and Nicodemus may have come to Jesus by night so that no one would know that an important Pharisee was visiting Jesus.
Question: How does a child grow to be a new person who can believe in Jesus?
Love Actions: Possible choices
1. Tell someone about the saving love of Jesus.
2. Draw a picture of the wind moving the trees. Use it to explain the Spirit's work in our lives.
3. Show a younger brother or sister the difference between a dark and light room. Hold hands while turning the lights off and on. Compare the absence of light and the presence of light to our lives without and with Jesus.
